Geography

This section is devoted to geospatial projects I have undertaken during my time as a professional and as a student at Texas A&M:

Topographic and Atmospheric Effects on Wildfire

This project began in late 2018 as my first foray into undergraduate research. It started out as a simple GIS project to determine what slopes were severely burned by wildfire, and now, in the final stages, involves collection and analysis of weather data and automation using python.

Table Mountain Pine is endemic to the Appalachian Mountains, and exhibits an unusual spatial distribution in its northern extent, where it is frequently found on North and Northwest-facing slopes. These pines are xerophytic, so it is more typical for them to be found on South-facing slopes. In order to try to explain this, I determined which slopes were burned most severely by wildfire, to see if the distribution of fires also deviated from South-facing slopes in the northern region. There was some correlation, but the next question was whether fires burned the way they did because of the pine distribution, or vice-versa.

The next task was to collect weather data, specifically wind direction, for the times of each fire. This phase is currently underway, and I am implementing a python script that queries a NOAA API for data collection.

Dendroecology

Over the summer of 2020, I worked as a dendroecology intern for Texas Conservation Science. My primary task was to measure tree cores taken from Big Lake Bottom Wildlife Management Area along the Trinity River, near Palestine, TX. This was part of a study to measure annual tree productivity in relation to river discharge. In addition to tree ring measurement, I conducted a few days of fieldwork to select and core trees.

Fire Ecology and Prescribed Fire

In the 2019 fall semester I took a course on fire ecology which also included 2 prescribed burns on the Texas A&M range area, which is being managed to be restored to post oak savanna.

Historical Demography

Since October 2019 I have been a research assistant for the Texas Research Data Center, on a project to digitize 1940 Census enumeration district boundaries.
